In architecture, we often speak of sustainability as the need for environmentally friendly considerations and the creation of "green" energy. But equally sustainable efforts aim at preserving the past, saving it from decay and adapting it to today's lifestyle and demands to ensure that il will continue into the future. On the descending side of last decade's building boom, we feel a growing concern that important physical history is being lost despite the fact that buildings can be reused. Such an increase in building often risks resulting in unreferenced architecture that can exist anywhere. The three projects presented here renovate preexisting structures. What are preserved are not monuments or landmarks, but buildings with a personal history. Rather than tearing down these old buildings, the architects have reused otherwise wasted built objects, creating new residences strongly connected to the history and significance of their site
